Be More: How does Delta Zeta help members to become more?

This month in the Delta Zeta blog we’ve discussed how members Do More and Care More because of their membership in the sorority. The third in our series is how our members are able to BE MORE because of Delta Zeta.

Delta Zeta Sorority provides an enriching experience that has a positive, lasting impact on the women our members become, the work they do, and the way they are inspired to lead, serve and give. Because Delta Zeta understands that involvement while in college prepares members for life beyond the campus, we have committed to providing the tools to our members to grow and develop while they are an undergraduate member. The undergraduates of today become the alumnae of tomorrow and Delta Zeta members are poised to become more, both in their personal and professional lives, because of the experiences they have in our chapters.

Delta Zeta’s Being More! Member Development Program, which has been piloted this past year with 17 chapters nationwide, is just one of the ways that members become more. The four-year program, which will be launched this summer at National Convention, is tailored specifically for Delta Zeta based on The Leadership Institute's competency model. The model, which identifies and defines the top traits for women to be successful leaders, has been validated by top business and community leaders, and allows all women the opportunity to grow and develop as they reach their potential. Look for more information on Delta Zeta’s member development program this coming fall.

Care More: How do Delta Zeta members show they care?

Last week’s blog post talked about how our members are poised to do more as a result of the experiences they take part in with Delta Zeta. This week we are going to talk about the next part of our philosophy this Biennium and how Delta Zeta members care more and show the world through their actions.

Service to others enriches the world. Delta Zeta members have cared about their worlds since the very founding of our Sorority in 1902. The Delta Zeta Creed says, "To those whom my life may touch in slight measure, May I give graciously, Of what is mine." Our members show care for the communities of which they are a part through Delta Zeta's national philanthropies of speech and hearing and the Painted Turtle camp. Both our collegiate and alumnae chapters support local and national speech and hearing organizations, volunteering many hours and generously fundraising for these causes.

Delta Zeta knows the power of women to effect positive change, and has proven it from our earliest volunteer work during World War I to the efforts given today to foster speech and hearing programs and support The Painted Turtle. Delta Zeta members take change into their own hands by volunteering wherever they see a need.

Do More: How can you do more because of Delta Zeta?

Delta Zeta enriches the lives of its members and communities of which it is a part. Collegiate and alumnae leaders will continue this tradition by doing more, caring more and being more. Throughout the 2012-2014 Biennium, many leadership opportunities have been provided which put the do more, care more and be more philosophy into action and help every member to enrich themselves and their Sorority. From the Norma Minch Andrisek Leadership Conference to the Chapter Presidents Academy, our members have learned how to do more, care more and be more.

As we head into the next Biennium, Delta Zeta will continue to Do More, Care More and Be More and our members will see this in action in a variety of ways. But, what does that mean?

This week’s blog post starts with how we do more because of Delta Zeta. Delta Zeta recognizes the importance of leadership. Today's leaders must be multifaceted individuals with the knowledge, skills, motivation and charisma to make positive changes and to inspire others to do the same. From our innovative partnership with the Leadership Institute – Women with Purpose to Delta Zeta’s Plaid program for collegiate and alumnae leaders, Delta Zeta is equipping members to be able to DO anything they want in life because of the experience the Sorority offers them.

Delta Zeta Philanthropy Partner Spotlight - Gallaudet University

Service to others enriches the world. The Delta Zeta Creed says, "To those whom my life may touch in slight measure, May I give graciously, Of what is mine." Our national philanthropies, supported by both collegiate and alumnae chapters, are speech and hearing and The Painted Turtle camp. Under the umbrella of speech and hearing, Gallaudet University is one of our speech and hearing partners.

Gallaudet University, in Washington D.C, was chosen as the first speech and hearing partner in 1954. It was the first school for the advanced education and the world's premier higher education institute for the Deaf and hard-of-hearing in the world. To further assist this mission, Delta Zeta has established a scholarship endowment fund that provides academic scholarships annually. The dance studio was named in honor of Delta Zeta for our continued support of their program.

How to support Gallaudet University:

Time
  • Collect school supplies for the elementary and secondary school. Please refer to the Delta Zeta website for the updated partner project list for school supplies which are needed.
Talent
  • Host a dance event in honor of the Dance Program. Conduct the dances with the music at a normal volume and then extremely low to simulate how Gallaudet students perform without hearing themselves.
  • Invite an American Sign Language Interpreter or someone from a local deaf or hard-of-hearing school to a chapter meeting. Have them share how Gallaudet has contributed to deaf education and American Sign Language.

Treasure
  • Send your donations to the Delta Zeta Foundation earmarked for Gallaudet University.
All donations are pooled and donated to the following:
  • Delta Zeta Scholarship Endowed Fund
  • Delta Zeta Fine Arts Endowed Fund benefiting the Dance Studio and Program
  • Yearly grants for campus and service improvements
